As a Houston family photographer, there is something especially meaningful about being invited into a family’s home to document the life they’ve built together. The Purcell family’s at-home portrait session was filled with laughter, fresh jokes, vibrant blooms, and the kind of connection that only grows stronger with time. It was also the first time in years that they updated their family portraits. So much had change for all of them in what truly felt like so little time.

A Backyard Rooted in History and Love

They chose their home for a reason. Every corner of their backyard garden tells a story. Years ago, Kristen and her husband met while serving in the military and eloped in Hawaii, while they were stationed there. Their love for the islands never faded. When they settled in Texas and started their family, they intentionally curated their garden to reflect that season of their life. Lush greenery, layered plants, and tropical touches transformed their backyard into a space that feels like a piece of paradise. A symbol of their travels, their love story, their love for the outdoors, and the season of life they’re in now.

The family chose a coordinated look of denim paired with white and cream tops. It was classic and cozy. The neutral palette allowed the lush greens of their garden to pop while still keeping the focus on them. It also made sure Mochi, their adorable Shiba Inu, stood out perfectly. I love including pets in family portraits, engagement photos, and wedding photos. Your furry friend always adds an extra layer of authenticity and joy. After all, they’re family too.

Family Portraits Keep EveRYONE in frame

This family portrait session meant a lot to. Kristen is a photographer herself, which means she is usually the one behind the camera. This session was her chance to step fully into the frame. It had also been years since their last full family portrait, the last time the kids were toddlers. Now they’re teenagers, practically young adults. Every time Kristen would share how fast they have grown she would become emotional. Time moves quickly, especially in motherhood.

The best part of the day was simply giving them space to be silly together. I nudged them into playful prompts, and soon laughter filled the garden. One of my favorite parts of the session wasn’t a posed portrait; it was a big bear hug prompt. Genuine smiles from teenagers? That’s always a win. And seeing Mom in the middle of it all, present, joyful, and embraced by her family, was exactly why these family sessions matter.

As a Houston family photographer, I believe your portraits should feel like you. Not stiff. Not overly posed. Just real connection preserved beautifully in the gift of photos that let you revisit the memory of your growing family over and over again.

Closeness, that candid joy, is always my goal as a family photographer in Houston.

Their testimonial says it best: “Michele came to our home for a fun casual family session. She's so sweet and got some genuine expressions out of my teenagers, and our sweet pup. I love how close and candid we all look in these photos! We'll truly cherish these for a long time."
