There is something especially meaningful about photographing the season right before a baby arrives. It’s an important milestone that represents life itself, the magic of true love as parents and a mother, and the joy of community. As a Galveston photographer, I love when I get invited to be a part of this moment. The Mesinger family’s beachfront baby shower in Galveston was full of laughter, good food, and the kind of moments that remind you what baby showers are really about: celebrating a generation of love, support, and motherhood.
This day didn’t feel like a formal event. It felt like a family reunion by the ocean, and it was beautiful.
A beach house full of family
The Mesingers chose to host their baby shower at a beachfront Airbnb on the west end of Galveston, a place that felt relaxed, coastal, and perfect for gathering a big family together. They told me that if they could live anywhere, it would be by the beach, so choosing Galveston for their baby shower was an easy decision.
When I arrived, the house was already full of energy. Kids were running around the backyard, adults were catching up, and the grill was sizzling. The weather was perfect, sunny with a few clouds and a cool ocean breeze that made the whole day feel calm and easy. As a Galveston photographer, these are the kinds of events I love most, the ones where people are truly present with each other. It’s often why I love working with small weddings. The brides and grooms are more capable of engaging with everyone with more time and presence.
From Maternity Portraits to party mode
We started the day with classic yet modern maternity portraits of the parents-to-be. Mom-to-be wore a light blue dress inspired by the beach, and dad-to-be wore a cozy sweater with tribal print over a black shirt and khaki pants. Mom-to-be glowed with beauty and love, and dad-to-be let her shine while he thoughtfully watched over her and the baby. These photos felt classic and not overdone, which matched the energy of the couple. What mattered to them most was being in the moment and exuding the favorite parts of themselves.
After the first maternity portraits, they changed into their second outfits: the cutest custom mom and dad t-shirts for expectant parents. Both the a and the o in mom and dad were seashells! Mom-to-be even changed into another blue dress with wave patterns to wear with the t-shirt, and put on a blue and purple headband full of pearls. The first outfits told the story of them becoming parents. The second outfit told the story of who they are: fun and full of personality.
You could tell they are the kind of couple who work hard but laugh even harder. During both maternity portrait sessions, they would throw in a joke or three, make funny faces, and talk so lovingly about each other and their hopes for their baby girl. Even as a maternity photographer, letting you have the space to slow down and get a little silly can also reflect perfectly the season of life you’re in.
The rest of the day was less about structured events and more about community. They spent most of their time talking with family, helping with the grill, playing with the kids, and opening baby gifts together. They really wanted the baby shower to feel like a family reunion rather than a formal party, and they absolutely succeeded.
The in between moments
My favorite part of the entire day wasn’t one big moment; it was all the small ones in between:
Kids falling asleep on their parents after hours of playing.
Couples bantering in the kitchen.
And family members talking about the past and the future all at once.
People sharing their hopes, their favorite memories, and any “small” detail of life right now. When I photograph people on any occasion, such as weddings or baby showers, I always look for those in-between moments. Life shows its true self, and the photos you receive at the end of the day are both beautiful and genuine. The couple made everyone feel at home in their Galveston Airbnb, including me. That kind of warmth is something you can’t stage; it just exists when people truly love being around each other. I have always appreciated this kind of love in my 5 years as a photographer in Galveston.
A celebration of generations
This baby shower wasn’t just about gifts or decorations. It was about celebrating a new life surrounded by a strong, loving community. You could tell this baby girl is already so loved and will grow up surrounded by laughter, support, and a very close family. The couple left the kindest review a budding Galveston photographer would love:
“She was very professional and present. We were a house full of kids, adults, and dogs. She was able to capture the big and small moments that are so special. Michele exceeded our expectations, and it was such a pleasure working with her on our baby girl’s celebration day.”
As a maternity photographer, hearing that I captured both the big and small moments means everything to me. When you're expectant, you’re going through big life changes for the littlest love story you will ever have, and every detail is worth remembering.
