As a wedding photographer, I get to witness so many beautiful reminders that love doesn’t need a big stage to feel impactful. Niki and Curtis’s celebration in Houston, Texas, was inspired by the simplicity of a Houston courthouse wedding but layered with personality, family, and so much laughter. From start to finish, their day felt relaxed, intentional, and full of heart, exactly the kind of wedding I love documenting.
A LOVE BUILT ON SHARED LIFE AND LAUGHTER
Niki and Curtis are the kind of people who instantly make you feel welcome. Both are highly educated, well-traveled, and devoted single parents who found love through their time of traveling. They actually met on a cruise. When they met, their connection came easily, not just through shared interests but through similar life experiences and values. They are deeply community-oriented, incredibly kind, and effortlessly funny. Truly, the kind of couple who light up a room the moment they walk in. That warmth and humor shaped every part of their wedding day, setting the tone for a wedding celebration that felt more like a joyful family reunion.
Their wedding took place in late March, which in Houston means prime spring weather. The sun was warm, the clouds softened the light, and a refreshing energy filled the air. The color palette for the wedding was blue and black. Blue has always been the bride’s favorite color, inspired by her love for the ocean and travel to beautiful water-filled destinations.
Marmion Park Portraits in the Heart of the Heights
Before heading to McCormick & Schmick's for their wedding reception, we spent time at Marmion Park in The Heights for bridal and family portraits. I recommended this location after working nearby at the Historic Heights Fire Station. They have a series of thoughtfully curated small parks right around the corner with tree-lined paths decorated with local art and varying sizes of Gazebos. Each location is perfect for daily walks, surprise proposals, or micro weddings.
Family portraits were a top priority for Niki and Curtis, and we intentionally slowed things down once we arrived at the park. Everyone had been busy getting the kids and adults alike ready for photos. We documented the family interacting with each other as we waited for everyone to arrive. Laughter and light conversation filled the air, and the simple joy of being together after a few years of being apart really sweetened the mood.
An Intimate Reception at McCormick & Schmick’s
The celebration continued at McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood & Steaks, a Houston favorite known for upscale dining and cozy event spaces. Guests had already arrived, smiling, laughing, and clearly excited to come together. Most guests knew that they were married, but there was more in store for this intimate gathering. This day was planned as a surprise, a courthouse-style ceremony disguised as an intimate family gathering.
For couples considering a courthouse wedding but want a more inspiring atmosphere, consider bringing the courtroom to you. Hire a local officiant to come to you.
The couple walked in dressed in their wedding attire to a standing ovation and applause. Greeting guests as they walked to the front when the officiant popped in from the back behind the DJ. Laughter filled the room as the bride and groom acted as if they had no idea what was going on. They looked to the guests, “Does anyone object to us getting married?” The guests answered loudly, “No!” And when the officiant announced, “You may now kiss the bride,” Niki tossed her bouquet over her head and kissed Curtis with pure joy. It was bold, hilarious, and perfectly them.
One of the most powerful traditions incorporated was Jumping the Broom, a ritual passed down through generations in Niki’s family. It was a moment that honored history and family, and grounded the day in something much bigger than the celebration itself. The speeches were equal parts hilarious and heartfelt, filled with stories about their first impressions of each other, playful advice for marriage, and so much love. Jokes were constant, smiles came easily, and the room stayed buzzing with warmth.
This is what I love most about photographing smaller celebrations, especially as a micro wedding photographer. There’s more room to be present with everyone and flow more fluidly with time.
Planning a Micro Wedding in Houston?
Niki and Curtis’s day is a beautiful example of how a courthouse wedding celebration or micro wedding can feel deeply personal, joyful, and meaningful. When you center your wedding around who you are and the people you love most, the result is just as unique and fun as a bigger wedding.
