Their day balanced tradition and personality in a way that felt effortless, peaceful, where it mattered most, and full of life when it was time to celebrate.

The day began at Holy Family HTX Episcopal Church, a space deeply personal to Jesse and Courtney. A few of their guests are also members of the church, which created a calm, familiar atmosphere as loved ones arrived from both near and far. It was also a place where their relationship grew after they met through mutual friends. They weren’t quick to say I love you, but they found that their shared interest became a catalyst for their love story. They are avid bird watchers. From the moment I met them, it was clear they are true “love birds,” exchanging warm smiles and complimenting each other, something that carried through the entire day.
Their ceremony was traditional and minimal by design, allowing the church’s unique architecture, created by a local Houston artist, all-white stones, and curving walls to shine. The ceremony was a mix of church proceedings, communion, tying of their hands, and a thoughtful message about marriage. Then heartfelt prayers for the couple to grow in their faith and in their marriage. When the time came to announce them, you could feel the guests ready to stand with praise. And they did.

After the ceremony, the energy shifted as guests gathered for the reception at The Historic Heights Fire Station. Located just four miles from downtown Houston at Yale and 12th Street, this venue is from a time when the Heights was its own independent city. The building once served as a combination of city hall, fire station, and jail for many years. Today, thanks to the Houston Heights Association, the 2-story building has been thoughtfully restored with modern updates, including a functional kitchen, remodeled bathrooms, a dedicated bridal and changing room in the former Major’s Office, and improved accessibility, while preserving its historic character.
I vouched for the venue when they mentioned it was on their radar for affordable wedding venues that work for small weddings, and we even toured it together to gather photo inspiration. The venue has an open ballroom on the 2nd floor with large windows and ornate ceiling lights that add to the history of the building. The first floor houses another open room that holds the grand bay doors. Whenever the opportunity arises, I love to tour venues with my couples to gather more insight into what they envision for their photos on the day. Seeing how their reception photos from the fire station had so much character and life to them without a lot of decor confirmed just how perfect it was for their celebration.
The reception was lively, humorous, and filled with movement. Both sides of the family set the tone with heartfelt and hilarious speeches, blending advice with childhood stories and plenty of laughs. Dinner featured thoughtful choices, including green-based meals and the cutest bread balls, followed by a diverse dessert table in place of a traditional cake. Once the music started, the dance floor stayed full. Iconic 80s classics and sing-along favorites from Mamma Mia and Footloose brought everyone together. The bride and groom were fully present on the dance floor, laughing and celebrating alongside their guests. My favorite photos of the night.
As they later shared, “We’re especially grateful for the way Michele captured the fly-by moments, the emotional reactions, and the special interactions that passed by really quickly.”
If guests weren’t dancing, they were putting together puzzles of the couple or taking playful photos in the fire station's jail cell. To end the night, while guests were still tearing up the dance floor, the couple brought out their bridal party and immediate family for a special send-off using bird seeds.
