Sebastian and Stacy’s wedding could be described as traditional, educational, and one big party. Their celebration was full of meaningful details and experiences that reflected who they truly are and why they love those around them. Nothing felt forced. Everyone was going with the flow. An ideal wedding for any small wedding photographer. It was simply a joyful day centered around faith, community, and science.

A Foundation Built on Faith & Movies

The couple met the way many traditional southern-grown relationships do, through church, introduced by friends and family who already saw the spark before they did. Their connection grew through shared faith and a sense of humor, and a love of movies and comics. Every time they interacted on the wedding day, you could see the fun and chill energy they brought to each other.

I met the couple at a wedding expo, and I could tell they were intentional. Immediately, they reached out to book because they wanted to support a growing business founded by a woman and a person of color. Plus, they liked how, in a time where most weddings were falling under the trend of sepia tone and heavy color filters, I was keeping to a true-to-color aesthetic.

At this point, I was about 2 years into running my small wedding photography business. So this was a big moment for me, and I will always be grateful.

a traditional church ceremony in houston

Their ceremony took place at their local church in Houston, nestled in a quaint older subdivision right outside downtown. The church held so much meaning because it was a second home for their family, and the location where they first met. The vibe was traditional and reverent, but never stiff. There was warmth in the room. Every guest that came had the warmest smiles and couldn't wait to pray over the couple with well wishes. You could feel how loved they are.

The bridesmaids wore vibrant red dresses, the bride’s favorite color, which added such a bold, joyful pop against the classic church setting. The groomsmen wore black suits with rich red and mahogany accents, tying everything together beautifully. The bouquets were lush with greenery and soft accents of white, pink, and red, romantic but not overpowering.

As a small wedding photographer, I always lend my direction for photos to what the couple does naturally, the perfect starting point. And during the couple’s photos, we captured some of the funniest expressions in front of the church’s grand statement wall. Their love for superhero movies shone through. And after they were married, the energy of joy and love elevated greatly among the couple and guests.

wedding reception At museum of natural science at sugar land

After the ceremony, we headed to the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land for their reception, and this is where their personalities fully took center stage.

Sebastian and Stacy love science and education. They frequently visit museums across Greater Houston, and this location felt perfectly aligned with who they are. The museum’s exhibits, dinosaur displays, and interactive spaces created such a unique and playful backdrop for a wedding reception.

As a Houston wedding photographer, I love it when couples choose venues that reflect their real interests instead of just trends. It lends to more activities and points of interest for both the couple and the guests. One fun thing the couple planned was a scavenger hunt at the museum for guests to easily explore the venue and interact more with each other.

It was different in the best way.

The museum, which opened in 2009 as part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s expansion into Fort Bend County, is an educational space that sparks curiosity for all ages. What many couples don’t realize is that the museum also offers private event rentals, allowing you to host receptions surrounded by exhibit halls and towering prehistoric displays. It’s a great wedding venue if you love science, dinosaurs, or simply want a venue that feels different from a traditional ballroom.

If I had to choose my favorite part of the night, it would be the dancing. Both of their families are avid dancers. Over the years, they’ve taken swing dance lessons together with friends and relatives, and it showed. Once the reception truly kicked off, the dance floor transformed. No movement was small. No laugh was quiet. They went all out.

I live for these moments as a small wedding photographer because there is unfiltered joy, bold expressions, and movement that can’t be staged. The entire room felt alive. Even the dinosaurs were getting down, just kidding lol. It wasn’t just a reception celebrating the couple; it was a shared celebration of community. In the downtime moments, the couple were constantly seeking out different guests to check-in with them and show love.

The flow of the day matters

One thing I’m especially proud of from this wedding is how seamlessly everything flowed, even when hiccups happened. When the planner arrived late, I stepped in as a temporary day-of coordinator to help keep us on schedule. In between keeping up with a general timeline, we were able to get a lot done with the help from my custom shot list that I have all couples make beforehand. Pro tip: A shot list is an outline of the primary photos you want captured on your wedding day (bride w/bridesmaids, couple w/ groom’s parents, couple w/ Bitsy the Poodle, etcetera). It’s an essential for seamlessly documenting the staples of any wedding within a quick timeframe.

This wedding taught me that being a Houston wedding photographer isn’t just about taking photos. It’s about protecting the experience. So, when we can step in to carry your dress, or double check the timeline, or kick the groomsmen into lining up correctly, we will because we want your wedding to be as stress free as possible.
