As an engagement photographer in Houston, I get to witness some of the most sacred, joy-filled moments of people’s lives, but Leanne and Jess’s surprise proposal will stay with me forever. It was musical. Intimate. Deeply emotional. And a beautiful celebration of love in its truest form.
Leanne had been planning this moment for months. She rented out a private performance hall in downtown Houston, complete with a grand piano, and carefully crafted a musical number just for Jess. The two of them have known each other for years. Their love story wasn’t rushed. It was layered with friendship, laughter, shared faith, and a deep commitment to serving their community through their church. They are the kindest souls, the biggest laughs, and people who love deeply.
a secret serenade
As their engagement photographer in Houston, my role that day started quietly. Very quietly. I hid behind a stack of chairs and folded tables in the corner of the performance space, camera ready. Jess had no idea. Leanne was mostly excited but a little bit nervous that the surprise would be given away.
She met Jess in the hallway and escorted her into the room. It was exhilarating hearing their steps get closer. As they entered the room Jess immediately was taken aback by the set-up, her face becoming blush and tears beginning to form. They sat at the grand piano stationed in front of large bay windows overlooking the city of Houston, and Leanne began to play. The room felt still in the way only truly meaningful moments can. Her voice carried across the hall, steady and emotional.
You could see it on Jess’s face, the slow realization that this wasn’t just a casual outing. This was something bigger. By the time Leanne finished the song and got down on one knee, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Tears. Hands covering mouths. That beautiful shock that turns into overwhelming joy. And then, laughter.
Because after Jess said yes, I stepped out from my hiding spot with the biggest grin on my face. That shift, from intimate proposal to celebratory engagement session, was a joy and a good way to help Jess breathe a little bit. Suprise proposals have great meaning and even greater impact on one's emotional state for the day.
Photographing them as they are
Once the nerves melted away, we captured photographs in the hall and outside the building, documenting their just-engaged glow. They couldn’t stop smiling. Couldn’t stop laughing. Couldn’t stop talking about how Jess never knew this is what Leanne was planning. Leanne wore a green dress with heels, fun and comfy. Jess chose a floral polo with khaki pants, casual and cute. They didn’t over-style the moment. They showed up as they are. And that’s exactly what made it perfect.
As a Houston engagement photographer, I always tell couples: you don’t need to transform into someone else for your photos. The most powerful images happen when you feel like yourself. Yes, coordinating outfits will help you look like a united front, but dressing like every trend or wearing clothes you can barely move-in can make the experience uncomfortable and create photos where you don't see your true-selves in them.
Kind words:
“We love working with Michele! She makes the process so fun and comfortable! She took photos for our engagement and we loved them so much we asked her to be our wedding photographer!”
a celebration odf identity and community
One of the most meaningful parts of this session was when they brought out a rainbow flag and wrapped it around themselves for a few portraits. It wasn’t performative. It was personal. It symbolized their connection to the LGBTQ community and their pride in building a life together openly and joyfully. Those images felt powerful, not just because they were joyful, but because they represented belonging.
Inclusivity isn’t a marketing line for me. It’s foundational to how I approach my work. Every couple deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and safe in front of my camera. They later shared that they chose me because they loved how I capture real expressions and prioritize inclusivity. That means everything.
